I'm in the public sector... none of us got to go home either. I didn't even feel the earthquake and since they only seem to happen here every 10 years or so I've got a long wait 'til the next one :S

As a Californian who actually stayed awake in geology, I know that a 5.5 on a nice, solid cratonic place like you've got back East transfers a lot more energy over a much wider radius than it does on the broken, fragmented multi-car-pile-up of tectonic plates we've got here.

The phrase "rings like a bell" has been used.

And, hell, a 5.5 makes us sit up and take notice even out here.
