I'm one of the purists. Early stereo was a technology pushed too quickly ahead of its time. As can be seen with most of the Beatle albums, there wasn't even stereo equipment available to record on... so it had to be artificially produced. Not a great way to go about things. That's why some of the older stereo records sound kind of funny, in comparison to the true mono, recorded on proper equipment.
