Is a deep hidden meaning or wisdom a band name requirement?
Is there such a thing as a great group name?
It was way more meaningful when 'beat' didn't mean musical beat, but 'beat' poetry catching fire at the time. It's as close to a "hippie" name as they could get at that time.
I think the writer of this piece believes they are being 'edgy' by calling The Beatles band name dumb. It's 'hip' to hate on The Beatles. Get with it, mollybeakers! LOL.
It's the name that spawned countless 'The' bands. I've never thought it was dumb. Heck, they could've used Johnny and the Silver Beatles, Johnny and the Moondogs, Silver Beatles...you get the picture.
Yeah, I looked at the RS list. Of course, half the bands meant nothing to me... but it does seem including The Beatles was a cry for attention.
The comments are interesting, too. I guess its something of a non-question because so many common words have become band names, and no one gives it a second thought. Doors, Who, Them... Strawberry Alarm Clock, for shit's sake.
The first thing that popped into my mind was exactly what mollybearks stated. I didn't know band name were required to have some deep complex meaning behind them. Geeze, I believe you're right jonesingjay it's their attempt at being 'edgy,' a very pathetic attempt at that. -rolls eyes-
I mean why not go with The Goo Goo Dolls? Who apparently took their name from a toy add in a magazine.
They seemed to skip out on the origins of band names such as Van Halen and The Rolling Stones; neither of which are deep or complex. It's all ways been the "cool thing" to go after the biggest names, just because of the fact that they're big.
In the end it gets the magazine attention, which is all they aim for. $$$
The "Beatles" was a genius band name. It was simple, cute, and slightly creepy - associated with mop heads and weirdness - what could be more fun for kids than that? Creep the parents out in a mild way. AND - The "Beatles" also conveys ACTION in the name, which I have found is rather important to a rock band's name. E.g., The Rolling Stones, etc. But the Beatles did this in one word, and brought in the concept of BEAT, and also did the whole insect thing. Wow!
So - somehow - that named seemed to GO PLACES, didn't it? Who would call something "dumb," when everything it touches turns to gold?
Someone who wants to appear edgy by calling out one of the dumbest band names ever. It so doesn't belong on that list. It actually should go on a list of the best band names ever.
And, jee, I don't recall them mentioning the name of THEIR band, now... & I Haven't seen anything in the charts lately... They must be too busy being experts...
The name Beatles even tho is a pun...is the best band name ever....best band name for the best band. If you think about it there some really odd names for bands out there....Beatles is not odd by any means
Well...for a group with a dumb band name they made it very far, didn't they??
Rolling Stones are not on the list? Quite inventive name indeed...lots of thoughts behind that name. Guess that was a band with a name that was easier to take as a name for a mag....you came up with a great invention of a name, guys!! *snorts*
