Bat, ow. Owie-ow-ow, this is so achy-perfect. Augh, you have smashed my heart to smithereens here with Runner -- he is so hopeful about everything, and that makes the reality of what's become of his relationship with Molly all the more heart-breaking.
He legit thinks they're doing okay. He's convinced himself, and he just wants to take her to the reunion and have a good time.
And the way it dawns on him -- that she's embarrassed, that she's ashamed of him and their life together -- is so awful.
(Though I can't blame Molly; she's the one having to face the truth, while Runner paints over the cracks and calls it a Picasso.)
I can hear this entire argument between them, and see the dishwater hitting the damaged tile backsplash, and just.
Ahhhh, my HEART.
And that title. Oh, Bat. I love your brain. <333 Thank you for this -- I wasn't sure what direction you'd run with this prompt, but I knew it would be stellar. Spoiler: I was right.
