All right, this is my last post aout this.

To some extent this has already been covered, so I apologize in advance if people here feel like I'm spamming or anything; I just wanted to post a few new quotes from DC execs, and after that, I'll stop until there's something more concrete like a new book.

Here we have an analysis of DC, and how WildStorm had to go because "It became redundant": Read more... )

Yeah, someone on the WS board picked up that Jim Lee's signing session is scheduled for the same time as the WS panel. I'm sure that's a total coincidence and has nothing whatsoever to do with trying to avoid meeting any WS fans face to face. *rolleyes* Too much fail, really. Especially the wording of that panel. What's in store for Wildstorm, indeed. Pff :(

An even better analysis on why Wildstorm became redundant courtesy of Warren Ellis (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/creators-react-wildstorm-end-100922.html)

I don't think there's anything wrong with resting an idea. Let someone bring back The Authority in ten years, when there's something new worth saying about the subgenre and it takes a company-owned asset to say it with. Honestly, when *all* the superhero comics are about ripping people's bits off and rubbing dead cats over themselves while pretending to be on heroin, The Authority as originally executed really doesn't bring the different any more, does it?

I read that one, and I see what he means, but there's been an argument about that on the WildStorm boards, too. I think the Authority is special for reasons other than their edgyness, so just because a lot of other superheroes are acting like bastards doesn't mean The Authority doesn't still have unique possible storylines.

That being said, he's right that if resting them for awhile until something good comes up lets creative people come up with better ideas, I'm all for that.

Heh. Good old Warren Ellis. You can always trust him for a good quote. He's right, of course - everybody else fell over themselves to imitate Authority even as DC was trying to pull its teeth. But the thing that's always somewhat depressed me is that Authority got so stuck with that damn 'edgy' tag because it had the violence and the widescreen and the gay that the really cool stuff got drowned out - the characters and the concepts. Century babies, Bendix' lab-grown supermen, the Carrier, the Bleed, the king of cities, Angie's nanotech, the doctors' garden, and all the spiky and interesting and surprisingly warm aspects of that team dynamic. But no, it's all about Midnighter kicking heads in, and that's probably all we'll ever see of the Authority in DC-ville. Sigh.

Oops, I seem to have hit the 'rant' switch today. I guess it's taken a few days for this WS stuff to sink in properly :|

EXACTLY. Authority has so many cool ideas, and it's so versatile! It's told stories from soap opera (Human on the Inside) to political commentary (Revolutions) to toilet humor (Kev), and done all of them well, and all of those SOLD well. Edgy was never all it had going for it.

Not spamming at all! Thanks for posting. I don't know what I think about the various snippets of information we've seen; mostly they seem like typical management-speak, they can't give any guarantees and are trying to do this with a 'nice face' when in reality we know all the decisions have been made. I read a CBR article that said they're layoing off 80 people which is almost a third of the DC workforce. Lean times ( ... )

No, by all means, go ahead. You're not the only one annoyed. I'm hopeful for the future, since a good writer can still do something with the characters, but the total disrespect shown the fans is really annoying--this new Jim Lee signing you mentioned above is just another showing of it. >_
