We are all products, like Oedipus, of an unlikely act of mercy. The incident of the shepard who cannot bear to kill a helpless infant and who makes that pivotal choice- to give him, cursed though he is, to a life of unknowing exile- is resonant for all of us, since to be human is to be in exile.
