TIME Discusses Fanfiction

Yesterday TIME published an article in their arts section on fanfiction (well, they call it "fan fiction" lol). It's pretty lengthy, and I haven't read it all yet, but if you want to take a look and discuss some of the questions and ideas the writer raises, I figured this would be a good place to do it. Some of the debate is stuff we've all heard

I found this piece really interesting because when I did my law review article on fan fic, I had to do something similar - ie, try to explain what we do as an outsider would, to other outsiders. It's odd to remove yourself from a culture that's so second nature to you, and yet others have no idea about (2 paragraphs in which I try to logically explain slash were edited a GODAWFUL number of times because I just couldn't figure out how to explain it well.)

Frankly, I was disappointed that Time didn't really get into detail as far was what the legal ramifications have been for fic related suits here in the US. But overall it was a solid article (though it does make us all seem a bit wacky, too.)

I found the "lie with Lupin" explanation to be quite hilarious. I'm not even in the HP fandom but got where that was going right away.

I'd say we are a bit wacky, but it's more fun that way.

I find it interesting that some author's are offended by fanfiction. I mean, I can see why since I tap into original fiction myself but I think I'd lean towards being flattered by it just because I know the mind set behind fanfic. Yes we change things, especially here seeing that none of us liked the ending to the Twilight Series, but I have to say that the reason we are so passionate about it is because we invest so much time inside the fandom. Who wouldn't want their readers to be that invested?
