Afterthought (LJI7 Week 5)

They say that when you die, your life flashes before your eyes.  As the ground rushed towards me after I'd jumped off the tall building, all I could think was "what a beautiful view ( Read more... )

I think I would need to wear special underwear for that, as I would have rather a lot of stuff leaving me at faster than gravity goes. Mostly because getting more than about ten feet above the ground makes me terrified, and ten makes me nigh-on paralyzed.

But good heavens, good for you.

I genuinely feel exactly the same way. The jump is 192 metres and as we were going up in the lift, I couldn't look at how high we were (it has a glass bottom so you can watch the ground rushing away). Right up until the second that I jumped, I thought I was going to wimp out. It's such an amazing feeling once you're out there though. I highly recommend it to everyone!

I freak out walking up a flight of stairs, so I'd never do something like that.

I'm not great with stairs either and to be honest, once I got in the lift and was on my way up, I seriously thought I was going to back out. I was on autopilot and convinced I'd wimp out right up until the moment I jumped. What you can't really tell in the video is that they are on walkie talkies between the men at the top and the guy at the bottom, so they give each other a countdown to jump, so my friends heard the "321" and they were all worried when there was no sign of me immediately afterwards. They'll refund your money at any point until you get on the platform, at which time you can still change your mind but you won't get your money back. If I wasn't the first one out of the lift and got to be first onto the platform (four of us were in my group to jump), I don't think I would have been able to go through with it. Far too much time to think and process the very, very long lift ride I'd just had.

You conquered your fears, congratulations! I liked that "My eyes were open!" hehe. I'd love to do something like that : ). My friend went skydiving once, I was jealous. I'd like to see you do that!

I am totally doing a skydive as soon as the opportunity comes up. The views must be incredible. That's what stunned me about doing the Skyjump. I thought it would be like a rollercoaster is for me, all about the sensation of falling, but I really underestimated how amazing seeing Auckland from that vantage would be. I even looked at the floor rushing towards me at times just so that I really had seen everything all around. It was unbelieveable.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH! You're so brave!

Also this killed me - "Great!" I smiled, full of the appropriate gratitude a wife should have for a husband thoughtful enough to give her the gift of certain doom.

I did a really cool zipline/obstacle course thing in Mexico on my honeymoon... but nothing like THIS! You're hardcore!

I'd love to do a zipline some day. I never have.

One of the things they use to motivate you before the jump is the thought of bragging rights. And it is pretty darned cool to be able to say that I did it!

Well done - I love that I got to read it and then view it. It's like reading the book before seeing the movie - you get the backstory to appreciate the video.

I'm just really glad that my friend made the video. The adrenaline rush means that I'd have forgotten a lot of what it was like without it!
