My housemate, who is a bit further on than me, has warned me that in FF13 you don't get to the world map until chapter 11 where you go from completely railroaded through plot to abandoned in the middle of nowhere with barely even a vague notion of what to do. I don't know how accurate that is, but the completely linear nature of the game so far is rather grating since I like exploring and going off to do side things whilst completely ignoring the main story.

Luckily I quite like the sci-fi elements and I'm a sucker for pretty graphics so I've been able to drag myself through the game so far with just that distant promise of sandboxy play and the obsession to pick up junk to upgrade random other junk I've also picked up. :D

Yeah, that little bit of freedom they give you they wrench away just as quickly. It's very disappointing. I live for sidequests. Rather than sit around and gripe about the game like some old curmudgeon, I'll give it a chance, though.
