LJ Idol Topic #28: Here There Be Dragons

In a particular bustling, modern city, there is a green and verdant park, where, if you allow yourself to become very lost indeed, you may find that you feel more as if you are in a lush meadow of wildflowers blooming in a little-known valley, or in a dark and mysterious woods that hearkens back to tales of gnomes and elves and witches who eat ( Read more... )

I really liked this story. I like what you modeled it after, and I love the fictional animal element of it all.

Very sad though.

It is sad, but I feel like it's very touching in a way, it's a testament to lifetime friendships and love and the souls of animals. I also grew up with these specific bears being the bears at my zoo, so I feel like they are my friends in a way and I grieved a little when I heard of Ida's passing. It was a reminder to me of the ephemerality of my childhood and I felt like writing about it from the perspective of a child like the one I was when I first saw them would be an interesting way to take an inventory of my feelings on her death.

Thank you!

It is touching too. I always talk to java_fiend about how animals love...stupid people would say they aren't capable of such things. But these people have not seen the unconditional love and tenderness that my dog and cat have displayed over the years. I feel very loved by them in return.

I can see why it would be interesting to write from that perspective and to think back. It's also interesting to see these things through a child's perspective.

Yeah, I think I always thought of the polar bears as an exhibit, as eternal, you know, even though they had distinctive personalities. You don't think the polar bear is going to die and leave its friend behind.

My cat died in November and his last day was very bittersweet because it was sad to let go of him but it was also so full of love.

I loved this. The tone was perfect so that the story was both fascinating and sad at the same time.

Ah, thank you! I suspect you know the polar bears, too? It's a weird thing, they were sort of an institution unto themselves.

Thank you! I was glad for the opportunity to be able to work through my own feelings about Ida's passing.
