"It's a terrible thing, it is! All fire and darkness and horns with wings like those a bat would be having only much larger. Taller than the party tree I think tho I didn't stand there long enough for the measuring of it, and with a lash of fire!" Samwise shuddered at the very thought of it and hoped it wouldn't be haunting his dreams that night.
"That does sound terrible. The Red Bull had no wings, and for that much I am thankful." She appears less agitated now, despite the hobbit's description. His stout-hearted presence has stopped her own nightmare from taking shape before her.
"I know the Bull seemed vast to me, and I did not stand long to measure him either. It was as though his horns could pluck the moon out of the sky. But I have often wondered how large he really was, when he was alone."
She looks down at Sam, her eyes thoughtful rather than afraid. "How did you escape this Balrog? If you don't mind me asking?"
I am very pleased to see your answers Unicorn, thank you.
But it may be that you will have a more proper answer soon enough.
And now you have aroused my curiosity, might I prevail upon you to explain this?
After all, what are human toes really good for, besides a show of wriggling now and then?
Well...they can have their uses. Humans are nearly incapable of walking if you remove their big toe. Or, at least, walking normally. Toes are also useful for gripping things, such as what sailors have been known to do when they climb into rigging. Or for picking things up off the ground when you don't feel like bending down and picking it up with your hands. Or for...a few more bawdy reasons.
Anything besides dreaming, I should think.
*he chuckles softly* I should think you would be correct.
*She looks sheepish, or as close to sheepish as a unicorn can ever look* I am sorry that it took my mun me a rather long time to answer them.
As to what I meant by a more proper answer -- *She hesitates; it isn't in her nature to knowingly skirt the truth* I don't think I can explain. Not yet. I feel that I have dreamt of such a choice, but you can see for yourself how strange my dreams are.
...Bawdy? What could be bawdy about toes? *Evidently this particular realm was left unexplored during her time as a woman*
No worries, my dear. I've learned patience, through the years.
*he nods* Then I shall wait for the more proper answer.
*laughter* Well, there are people who enjoy having their toes sucked as a form of foreplay. And there are those who will use their feet and toes in rather naughty ways under tables where they think they can't be seen.
*not as taken aback as she could be, but still somewhat bewildered* I see. Well. Amalthea didn't use her toes for anything like that, but she did go barefoot much of the time. I got used to putting on dresses, and binding my hair with ribbon. But I never could abide the feel of shoes for very long.
*She doesn't startle at his approach, though her flanks heave slightly, as if with a soundless sigh*
I suppose I am. My dreams are nothing like what a unicorn's ought to be. *She lifts her head then, peering at him curiously out of sea-dark eyes* You knew me for a unicorn, didn't you? Am I the first one you've seen?
*He smiles gently, and nods* Da, I did. Where I study, we see quite a few of them, but none of them talk, or, probably more likely, don't have anything to say that we humans would understand. *There is no censure in his tone, calm acceptance that some many creatures find human thought processes often trivial.*
My homeland is Russia - there are many tales told in my town of how the unicorns roamed the Sayan Mountains, dancing with the snow. When I was a kid, I'd go out and run through snow falls, pretending I was dancing with 'em too.
*His words make the unicorn smile, and it's as if a cloud has finally loosed the full moon. She looks at him with open delight, moving a little closer to where he stands.* I've encountered quite a few mortals who claimed the unicorns in their world never spoke. I had to suggest to each of them that unicorns may be perfectly able to speak, and simply choose not to.
As for dancing in the snow -- perhaps it was not all pretend. You are a magic-user, yes?
Approching with caution so not to spook her, "Mo àlainn bubhall*, you are distressed, is there anything I can do to help?" Laying a gentle hand on her mane.
The unicorn leans into Aille's touch, her white head bowed. "Your presence is comfort enough." She nuzzles at the goddess's hand, then looks up at her shyly. "Though I would like... well, it seems rather silly... but do you know any songs? It's been so long since I heard anyone sing."
Stroking her mane gently, leaning in close, "'Tis not silly at all, it would be my pleasure to sing for you."
She thinks for a few moments then begins to sing softly...
Tis the time now of Springtime, And Our Lady fair. When the birds sing gaily Flying through the air. And the sweetly scented flowers In their garments bright, Color hills and meadows, What a lovely sight. Then dance and sing a joyful song, While all around us new life sings along. There's peace, love, and joy everywhere, Let it in your heart, to abide there.
She sighs, and this time it's a sigh of simple content, the kind almost any creature gives when a weight has been lifted from their heart. "That is a lovely song. It reminds me of my forest, when it's good and green and unburdened by memory." The unicorn rests her head in Aille's hands, closing her eyes for a long moment -- not because she is weary or troubled, but because she feels absolutely at peace.
*The unicorn shivers slightly* It makes me wonder if the Bull is not still roaming through distant lands. I did not destroy him, you know. I only drove him into the sea... and if the sea isn't deep enough to drown all the unicorns in the world, I doubt it could hold the Red Bull for very long.
He is why people such as myself exist. I hope to one day settle down when I find the man I'm meant to love forever. *smiles at the thought* Until then, I do what I must.

A Bal-rog? She stumbles a little over the name. I've never heard of one before. What is it?

Hey, Beautiful. *approaches slowly, both hands out, palms up to show he's no threat* You look a bit weirded out.
