If you don't want suffering in books, for the love of God don't read "The Alchymist's Cat" or "Thomas." ESPECIALLY "The Alchymist's Cat." What is read cannot be unread.
On the other hand, at least you can't accuse the author of suger-coating things for the kiddies! He's very much of the 'life sucks and then you die' school of thought.
Haven't read Thomas (though I do have it right here) but I don't remember Alchemist's Cat having that kind of victory-belittling stab-you-in-the-heart-and-twist moment. Heck, Final Reckoning(?) had roughly the same ending, but it had the decency to stick the tragic stuff BEFORE the victory...
Then again, the grimdarkness of these books is the main reason why I keep coming back to them, so I guess I'm getting what I wanted from them.
