Dear livejournal....

I have a question and maybe you can help.
My co-workers and I were discussing which is ruder, guests who don't clean up after themselves at a party/ dinner event, or hosts who expect guests to clean up after themselves/ other guests.
Can you settle this for me?

Thanks!
Signed, wondering.

The latter. As a guest, I don't really expect to clean up after myself.

at a dinner event i would never expect to clean up after myself. i wouldn't make a big mess or anything but i think that's really wierd for a host to expect their guests to clean up after themselves! ha ha

me too! I mean, call me crazy, but when I look at a big mess after a party, I take it as though people had a really good time and that the party was a success. Plus, how difficult is it to wash a few dishes or recycle a few bottles? I don't want my guests doing that when they could be having a good time chatting...
I would NEVER EVER dream of allowing my guests to clean up! but apparently that's just me...people have different ideas of what "manners" are I guess.

all that is true, but i've also been to parties where people think it's ok to make a mess for no other reason than 'it's not my house.'

good point, I knew people like that too. Hopefully we are at an age when those people have either outgrown their immaturity, or they are just not invited to functions any more.

if it's a dinner party and i'm a guest i'll usually try to do the dishes or help with dishes and cleaning up the table and stuff, or if i'm the last one at a party i'll put together some beer bottles maybe, but i don't think any of should be expected by host or guest, and i'd never expect anyone to do so in my house.

Also agreed. I usually try to help at someone else's house, but I feel guilty when people do dishes when Im having a party.
