I'm currently sitting in the university library. To my left, there is a large floor-to-ceiling window, on the other side of which is a sheer drop to the reception below. The window does not in any way open, and there are no other openings anywhere above it. In short, there is no way I can think of for anyone to reach the window ledge on the other

Or, more prosaically, from time to time someone may clean the window using a 'cherry picker' or scaffolding from above. It could have fallen from a window-cleaners pocket (but why a window cleaner would have a pink highlighter...)

Ah yes, the knotted sneakers. We have a LOT of those around campus (one telephone pole is officially known as the Shoe Tree). The ledge is directly above the security desk - maybe the staff got bored one night.

Although believe me when I say I don't think these windows have EVER been cleaned.
