A silly comment to leave on such a great post, but how do you pronounce Middemesne? I've been saying it sort of like "Mid-de-MEZ-nay", so I'm just curious.

Ah! No, that's a good question.

"Demesne" is a real word. It's pronounced like the word "domain," except instead of a long "o" vowel in the front it's more of an "uh" or "ih" (short I) sound.

So: mid-uh-main
("main" as in Main Street)

The word has a double emphasis, on the first and third syllables:

MID-uh-MAIN

I don't remember the author, but I read a sci-fi book when I was a child and the author used the word "demesnes" a lot. I made the same pronunciation mistake as you, and I vowed revenge on the world. Now I have it! Muah ha hah!
