Shinigami...yes, the term sounds familiar to me, not in a way of being book-knowledgeable about the subject, but something else, just knowing it. Apologies if my rambling is too vague, I can't really explain it coherently. Yet the shinigami here don't strike that chord of deja vu with me at all, so maybe there are shinigami from different universes that are present?

L, at least from what I can remember, was the alias of a superdetective who was considered the world's best one. L was head of the investigation team against a criminal known by "Kira."
