My guess is a deleted file that a process still has open. Of course, because it's been deleted you'll never spot it in a directory listing, though I think you can still see it in /proc/*/fd

Snap. The usual cause is people holding on to logfiles after they've been rotated out of existence. Damn pain when you're designing the
things ..
