House in a shipping container

Dec 23, 2007 22:58

Remember how I was interested in putting an entire set of expandable living quarters inside a shipping container on the back of a truck?

Been done.

At least I know who to get to build the thing, now... and he's even done some 3x2 designs.

You couldn't walk around naked in there, though.

Depends on how exhibitiony you were feeling :)

But yeah, the designs in the animations aren't enclosed, and the ones on the site which are enclosed don't fold up. But the builders do have experience with fitting stuff into a container-sized volume in a 3D way, plus the pnuematics to make the various panels fold and slide. Pretty much all the moving panelling would be the full sides (or front, back, roof or floor) of a forty-foot container, and it would all lock together as it extended, so there wouldn't be the structural integrity problems associated with slideouts.

Plus, my design has metal walls on all sides - if you were feeling like mooning the world you'd have to climb on top of the trailer to do it :)
