Fight scene!

As a side effect of the clearup in the den, no less than five Transformer toys seem to have found their way to my desk.

Damn, I forgot how freakin' huge Tidal Wave is. And while unpacking him from the bubblewrap he's been in for a year, I once again ran across the problem with one of his missile launchers triggering when changing to robot ( Read more... )

Hall costume, then :)

I've spent a couple of years idly figuring out how to make transforming costumes of various characters. Some are easier than others, obviously. The triple changers are wonderfully tricky. Anything which breaks apart to transform is a fantastic challenge not only technically but from a choreography point of view as well. And I'm still tweaking G1 Megatron designs in my head after years and years - he's a right pain to be able to transform while (a) remaining upright in gun mode, and (b) not pushing the wearer's spleen out their ear.

G1 costume designs I really like: Blitzwing, Omega Supreme, Snapdragon, Devastator, God Ginrai. The last three were particularly interesting - Snapdragon especially, as he was a smaller design and there wasn't a lot of wiggle room in the costume - even aside from him being a triplechanging Headmaster. I had to completely redesign half the transformation processes to avoid turning the person in it to pizza while still allowing both the dino and robot modes to walk around and move ( ... )

Heh. First I have to get the money to either learn or hire the skills I'd need to make some of my freaky designs even remotely realisable. Probably vacuum-forming, electrics, electronics, and a bit of microprocessor programming for starters. Some mechatronics wouldn't go astray either. And unless I wanted to be spending around ten thousand dollars per suit, I'd be having to rig a pile of piezoelectric joint sensors and use old sets of datagloves. It's still not going to be cheap.

Of course, I could always try and rig something up out of cardboard and foam, but it seems a bit 'done' - not really all that much wow factor left in a cardboard box robot, unless it's something special.

To be honest, I'd prefer Micron Legend Shockwave (the purple and grey Japanese version) to the Energon Tidal Wave (lots of translucent green and extra gold detailing) that I have.

Should you run across a ML Shox, I'll swap ya!
