Late for Dinner - Open to Any - Complete

To say the afternoon had been emotionally draining would be an understatement. First the tour - old memories, new memories, Harry's distress - and then the brief conversation after which ended with Severus' rather acerbic farewell. Fred stalked over from where he and Theo the Slytherin had been standing. He came right up to the edge of the table.

"What the bloody hell is going on?!" he asked very loudly.

During the few minutes Remus had been in the hall, the feeling that something wasn't quite right had intensified. Dotted throughout the room small disturbances had seemed to blossom...a murmur here, a whispered disagreement there. It had looked like a couple people in the corner nearest him were about to be violently ill. All-in-all, the undercurrents of emotion running through the hall came across to his still slightly more canine than human senses as similar to the buzz just before a lightning storm.

Fred's rather ballistic approach drew Remus' attention, but did nothing to ease the sense of wrongness. The young man looked upset, betrayed, ill, and a myriad of other emotions Remus couldn't even begin to define.

"I'm not sure," he replied evenly. "I was supposed to meet Tonks for dinner. But when I arrived a few minutes ago, she was nowhere to be found."

Soft brown eyes turned to regard the young redhead with the sudden wary look of an animal scenting danger.

"What happened, Fred?"

Fred ran a hand through his hair, What had happened?

"I-I don't know, I was standing there, and I think I was okay with it. Then there was this, I don't know, wave of magic. It made me feel sick. And then I realised who I was standing next to, and," he dropped his voice to a whisper, "what I had done. Did I really?" he asked with pleading eyes, wanting someone to tell him it was all a joke.

A wave of magic? Was that what Remus had been sensing? In his human form, he couldn't make use of the wolf's sixth sense at all beyond 'vague uneasiness'. But magic might explain the minor disturbances which now seemed to be rippling through the hall. But, why hadn't Remus felt more then ( ... )
