Rat poison?! They say there is no criminal investigation yet. Could this have really been accidental?

ETA: At least 40 parts per million.

About Aminopterin (because I was curious ( Read more... )

They're saying it was on (in?) the wheat gluten, which they knew was the culprit from the start. And though I can understand that there are allowances/the possibility for accidental harvesting of rats and, apparently, rat poison, or dead rats with bellies full of rat poison... is that really enough to kill so many animals?

They seem to be investigating mold in/on the wheat gluten. It must have the same properties as rat poison.

I just thank God I kept forgetting to buy the wet food I usually give my cats as a trest.

They suspected mold at first but a lab in NY found Aminopterin, highly toxic used as a rodenticide in China, in the food, to the tune of at least 44 parts per million.

True, but the wheat gluten came from China. I wasn't pointing a finger at Menu Foods (although you'd think maybe they would have asked their Chinese suppliers what they were using as pest/rodenticides, or done some extensive testing...) just giving additional info.

They're also wondering about the bait used around the grain storage facilities. My quesiton is...Is any of this grain used for human consumption?

The plus side in all this seems to be a boom in the organic pet food industry.

We've (my roommate and my co-workers and I) have all been wondering the same thing.

I've been thinking about going raw. My brand was not one affected, but this has made me really look into pet foods, and find that even premium foods are usually not so "premium". So at the very least, I'm going for a more meat protein-based food than my current one.

Yeah. The whole recall was a scary situation. My dog's pet food was on the list...I was really scared, but I took her to the vet here and they were doing free check-ups for all the scared and angry pet parents...

That was very nice of them! I'm glad she's okay! Er, well, you didn't say she was okay but I'm going to assume because my heart cannot handle it if anything happened to her!

Our food was not on the list, but we've considered that Edward might have gotten food from a neighbor (he wandered and would be gone for days), but there's really no way to know.
