It's too bad that you have so much to say in this post, as I fear this but might get lost in the crowd:
As intense as the slash kerfuffle has been, to me, it deplorably lacks in substance. Critics of slash have failed to provide primary source material to prove their point, thus reducing most of the argument to mere polemics. Call me a bookwormish nitpick who bleeds ink when you poke her with a sharp pen. Don’t care. I like proof as a sidedish to a serving of big words.
You're so very right. This entire debate has been unworthy of the name. I wish somebody smart would go over to the other side so the discussion would at least be interesting. Though, now that I think about it, the lack of and good rhetoric and objective fact on the other side speaks volumes.

Ooops, thank you for pointing this out. Maybe the latest kerfuffle made me more cautious than I thought... Could well be I put it all the way down there to say it but hide it... Hmmmm, my inner coward does have a couple of sneaky tricks up her sleeve.
Guess, I should dedicate an individual post to that particular article. I also want to do a close reading of the article on queer canon.
BTW: I'm sorry I replied so late. There's the time difference and I went to see Pirates in the Carribean today, after which my friend and I spent six hours of shallow nattering over the Erroll Flynn'ish appeal of Orlando Bloom, and Johnny Depp's move to France, the differences between US-American and European star cult, the love life of the common ant and.... oh, yes... we devised a wicked plan to secure world peace involving lots of calories and female world domination.
