After 30+ years of stagnating real wages, escalating prices, and increasing gap between rich and poor, the idea that this surprises anyone indicates some profoundly skewed and dangerous problems of the US concept of both democracy and society as a whole. The economy was able to ignore these problems immediately after the end of the Cold War due to still being larger than all the rest, but this can no longer be sustained and may in fact do in the United States' overall economy in a process similar to what the Standstill did in the Soviet Union. My, irony bites hard....
