It gets better. That sip of the shot? It was refilled in a single day, March 16th to March 17th. National debt grew by $72B the day Congress made $6B in cuts.

We are so fucked.

It's all well and good to compare numbers, but without the context of what the deficit is being spent on and what the proposed cuts are, there's some context lacking. When it comes to the US budget deficit, politicians fall into a few groups:

1. Want to show they're "serious" about the deficit, where serious means "spreading the pain". Which in this case means spreading additional pain to those already feeling approximately all of the pain.

2. Are glad to have the excuse to destroy institutions they don't like (e.g. NPR), even when doing so will save approximately $0.

3. Have a snowball's chance in hell of actually getting anything done.

One thing's for sure. Whatever happens, the military will get enough to go on a booze-filled bender through Libya or wherever else.

If you're overweight you can go on a diet, or you can cut off your hand. The latter choice is draconian, even though the resulting weight loss is small.
