This is not too far removed from what fundamentalist religion is: a memetic parasite that installs an artificial deficiency and then offers an artificial solution. And that makes sense, since artificial scarcity and fundamentalism are both products of the culture industry.

Also, there are answers that don't require artificial scarcity. I saw a street magician perform in Jackson Square in New Orleans a couple of days ago. And he did a masterful job of pulling in the crowd, stringing them along, entertaining them, and then right before the climax of his show, he passed around the hat. People were tossing in $20 bills. I do believe in the Street Performer Protocol as one way for artists to make money selling their content online. Of course, it cuts out the record companies and the publishing houses, but they're clinging to an outdated business model as it is, and do you remember what Princess Leia said to Grand Moff Tarkin?
