This is not too far removed from what fundamentalist religion is: a memetic parasite that installs an artificial deficiency and then offers an artificial solution. And that makes sense, since artificial scarcity and fundamentalism are both products of the culture industry.

Also, there are answers that don't require artificial scarcity. I saw a street magician perform in Jackson Square in New Orleans a couple of days ago.
