I'm not exactly sure what you mean about staying un-lynched... you think there are no black people in North Dakota? Because of...? (And you live in Tennessee?)
The religious environment isn't as bible-belt-y as the South in which you reside -- I lived for 20 years in the Florida Panhandle (otherwise known as LA: Lower Alabama). Nobody thumps around here, they just go about their business and go to their own church, if they go.
Politically, again, not sure what you think goes on around here. We elect republicans statewide, democrats nationally (which may change), and a mix in different localities.
With regard to sexual orientation, Bismarck, Fargo, and Grand Forks are probably the best bets for social openness. We're working on that, but it takes time. Mostly people just let others do their own thing. Can't help the gossip mongers.
