Of course, the "no atheists in foxholes" thing is a profound insult because it implies that you cannot be a courageous atheist. It's insulting to the religious, too, because it suggests that "god" is something people turn to out of fear.

But the general meaning is "people abandon their pet theories when bombs fall around them and beg to be saved instead". There hasn't been a lot from the usual "stop regulating us; the market works" chorus ever since a market failure made their wealth go away.
