I'm not so sure this really fits here, as AOL was clearly dying before the market went South. They were a relic of the dial-up age, and never found a way to be profitable once people were no longer dependent on them for their connection.
I think that the slow, painful beating of AOL as a viable player in the broadband age does speak to how this downturn is, in some ways, a continuation, if not finalization, of things unfinished during the last recession.
