As you can see, it's been pretty quiet around here for a while now. So, my best suggestion for fics is to go through the archives of the comm. That's how I found so many wonderful stories when I joined the fandom. You'll even find some other posts where folks have asked for, and received, recs. :)
There are also a lot of stories at Firefly's Glow Archives, especially the classics you asked about.
And then there's the Mal/Simon filter at Archive of Our Own.
One recent fic that I will recommend which didn't get posted to this comm is Energy by jackson-rayne. It's a good look at Mal & Simon through Kaylee's eyes. wizardwithwords' fic series that she linked in the previous entry is also off to a good start.
