I love this - always have - and it's the portrayal of Ned here that really gets to me. All that well-meaning kindness that's given to *precisely* the wrong person, who is bound to misinterpret it and despise it as weakness and incomprehension. Of course, it *is* incomprehension, but of a sort stemming from a nice nature rather than the more malevolent kind...

They are full of fail, but so utterly lovable for it.

And I'm so glad Ned came through that way -- it's how I see him at least in this context.

Of course, it *is* incomprehension, but of a sort stemming from a nice nature rather than the more malevolent kind...

He can't possibly understand Richard, and even though he tries, it just doesn't work at all. And it's not really his fault, even if he's not the brightest bulb in the box.
