Someone told me last night that people fear others who are "different" and "unique" because it's a painful reminder that no matter how much they try to "fit in", even they ultimately won't, and that's the last thing they want to hear!

I'm in agreement with that speaker. "Norms" don't want to stand out because they get noticed but, paradoxically, try to fit in. Doesn't that make them noticed which goes against their notion of not wanting to stand out?
