Decisions, decisions.

I could finish writing this FtCM piece (I started writing it because all the content for the articles I'm actually getting paid to write were stuck on gmail while it was down) on how critical expectations, the fine line between performer and performance, how sensitive people get about their kinks (I don't mean that in a dismissive way. It's a fact ( Read more... )

the fine line between performer and performance... great drama over on Bitch's website because a group of people really don't like... "Feast of Burden," ... and how internet culture makes it IMPOSSIBLE to have a real discussion about these things (The word "FAIL"? Check.... People talking in absolutes instead of understanding that something really complex is going on here? Check.)While I don't feel like you're totally taking the author's side here, I think you're letting her off too easy by blaming "internet culture". The article really sets up this kind of reaction--in that it a)starts with a gross-out picture and subtitle to match, dehumanizing people from the start, and b)goes from what starts off seeming sympathetic and nuanced to a simple proclamation: it's wrong bad and really about men trying to control and immobilize women. ...Basically, everything the commenters do, the OP does, and I believe it was for the print edition, no? ...If it was for an online edition, then she should definitely have included more links ( ... )

Oh my gods, if only I hadn't kept reading the comments on that article. (And if I had a dollar for every time I've run into people who say that the only way to prove oneself "innocent" after a personal attack is to stay silent and take it...)

(btw, this website stresses me out to read it, but it is applicable to so many situations.)

I think pride gets in the way of a lot of productive discussions. It's not shameful to admit misunderstanding, or to refine an interpretation based on new evidence. OMG, y'all. x_x
