Patapsco Valley State Park--Ridge Trail

Yesterday, Bobby and I took a four-mile hike along the Ridge Trail in the Orange Grove area of Patapsco Valley State Park. The trail was a nice mixture of hills and varied terrain that followed the rim of the Patapsco River Valley.

He smelled very bad, to be nice about it, but I suppose anyone would, hanging out with a bunch of rotten leaves in a puddle alongside the road. Phew.

Heh, I have yet to come across a nice-smelling turtle. And I say that without the experience of having intentionally sniffed one. ;) An old pet of mine could do an impressive job of stinking up half the house in a short amount of time despite having no fur and rarely leaving the tank, and the pet shop I used to work for apparently wasn't allowed to sell or keep turtles because of how "dirty" they were.

*loves the old decaying buildings* :)

The only turtles we ever kept were box turtles...and we kept them in the yard at that! So this was my first sniff of one of the more aquatic varieties. :)

Of course, now that I can say I've smelled a turtle, it's not an experience I need to repeat!

I believe that selling turtles was illegal for a while in the U.S. because they are vectors for bacteria, particularly Salmonella (iirc). After finding the turtle (and being unable to resist handling it), we now carry antibacterial stuff in our backpack for that very contingency. :^P
