So you live right near the university and it's a dangerous area? That seems weird.

It is weird. The campus itself is really nice (it has its own police force... not campus security but actual commissioned officers, albeit ones whose professionalism I don't think much of), but the area immediate around, the University District, is at best slightly skeezy. Or so it seems to a guy like me who came up in a small town and views any number of shootings per month as bad. There's far worse neighborhoods in Seattle, and plenty of cities in the U.S. where shootings are a daily occurence. Still, I don't let my guard down when outside after dark
