We lost Terry Pratchett, too

Terry Pratchett passed away a couple days ago. (Almost exactly a year after we lost Aaron Allston, another of my favorite writers.) He'd had health problems for a while, but it still came as a surprise, at least for me. I thought he'd be with us for a few more years, manage to write a few more books ( Read more... )

The last one I read was Snuff, which was just... odd-ish. Vimes seemed OOC... I have Raising Steam and will read it, but I'm not exactly looking forward to it, y'know?

I liked Snuff, although it definitely had a different tone and style than other Discworld books. I was also a bit thrown by Wilikins sudden going from "butler who grew up rough and can be surprisingly vicious in a fight" to "butler who is secretly an uber-badass killer."

Raising Steam was mostly fine, but it had some moments that felt very off to me. There was a pretty major retcon in that now they're claiming that Moist knows how to fight even though previous books made it clear that he was clueless in that regard and would be more nervous holding a weapon than having one pointed at him. They were also a bit too casual for my liking in their use of the Summoning Dark. It felt a little bit more like a Discworld fanfic than an actual Discworld novel.

Honestly, the last couple books were different enough in style from previous Discworld novels that I wonder if someone was "helping" Pratchett write them.

There is apparently one last Discworld book that's been written but not yet released, and I'm still looking forward to reading it.
