I'm starting to get the sneaking suspicion that Watermind by M. M. Buckner is not a good book.

Usually when I'm reading a book, I'll try to keep reading it as long as possible. I'll have to force myself to stop reading it and use my free time for other things, like writing, so that I don't finish it too quickly.

With this book, I keep trying to find ( Read more... )

Then don't finish reading it. If you're not enjoying it you should find something that you will enjoy reading.

I've certainly been tempted to just ditch it, but it's the last unread book I have left at the moment, so if I do I'll have nothing to read at work. Also, it was a gift, so I feel obligated to at least get to the end....

But gah! The science is really questionable, which just makes the anvil-dropping "message" all the more absurd. And the protagonist is so obnoxious! The author wants us to think that she's really smart, but she's a moron who does stupid things and is also a jerk but everyone wants to sleep with her. And I'm not sure, but I think the Cajun people might be offensive stereotypes.

I'd recommend something better, but right now I haven't actually finished enough of the books I got over the holidays to tell you if any of them are any good.

Normally if I were out of books I'd just read Allston's X-Wing books again until I got some more, but I loaned them out to someone to help inspire him for playing in my Wraith Squadron-inspired Star Wars RPG campaign.

Did you finish it? I keep passing it in the shop, being intrigued by the cover, blurb, and premise, and then being turned off by the writing style on the first page. This has happened several times, as if I'm trying to convince myself or something...

I'm about halfway through. (It's going much more slowly than books usually go for me, because I'm avoiding reading it.) I really wouldn't recommend it. That writing style? Yeah, you'll be putting up with that all the way through. Plus some really broad Cajun stereotypes with thick accents that are a pain in the ass to read ( ... )

Excellent. I actually bought myself "Boneshaker" for Christmas.
