*I come into work and relieve the guard before me*
Him: "You know what I need?"
Me: "A drink?"
Him: "I need a droid that understands the binary..."
In Unison: "...language of moisture vaporators."
Him: "And I'm not settling for one that just worked on binary load lifters, either."
Me: "As well you shouldn't."
Him: "But what I could really use is a drink

I'm assuming you'd had prior nerd conversation with this coworker, but that's an awesome bit of dialog regardless :D

Him: *asks why we don't do things in a different way that's more efficient*
Me: "Well, I've heard that they used to do it that way back in the day."
Him: "'Before the dark times. Before the Empire.'"
Me: "'A more elegant weapon, for a more civilized age.' Fellow nerd, huh?"

We frequently discuss scifi novels at shift change. He's the one who suggested I read the 1632 series, for instance. He also likes Farscape.
There's a fair number of nerds at my work. The supervisor for the janitors is a big fan of Star Trek and video games and hard scifi, and we chat about various things during work.
And one of the guards who comes in to relieve me in the morning likes video games, RPGs, ren faires and anime. (Although her tastes and mine differ somewhat.)

I used to have all sorts of odd and conversations with my co-workers when I still worked at the movie theater.
Unfortunately the only nerd at my current job is a computer nerd obsessed with Linux, something I know almost nothing about.
If I actually played any of the Halo games I'd probably also be the type to read the tie-in books. I seem to read the tie-ins for almost everything I'm a fan of. You should see how many SW EU books and comics are on my shelves. Not to mention the Whedon-verse and Who-verse tie-ins I've read.
And yes, nerds do have an almost instinctual ability to find other nerds. I don't know if it's how we dress, how we act, or the way we always seem to be lost in thought, but somehow even if we try to hide our nerdiness from the mundanes, we just can't hide it from other nerds.

Most of the Halo books are quite good. Bungie always has a lot of story background for its games.
I think we nerds mostly spot each other by the references we make. It's not always so easy to tell, however. A friend of mine didn't know a girl he knew through the fire-performing community was an anime fan until he saw she had a Tachikoma plushie.
