Jurassic World

The hubs and I went to see Jurassic World last night (which you'd think I would know how to spell by now but obviously not, thank you spellchecker) and here are some thoughts...

Not exactly brief... )

film, feminism, wishful thinking, representation

Thank you for this review; I definitely will skip this now.

The funny thing about the original Jurassic Park was that even its gender roles kind of annoyed me -- I think because it's always a little boy nerd/geek who's obsessed with science -- always always always. (He's almost always white, too.) It's not that there's anything wrong with that character, but that it's always that character.

I was a little older than you when it came out, so maybe I'd just seen enough of that unimaginative archetype with, say, Wesley Crusher. (Who was originally written as a female character but changed because a boy gave them "more plot possibilities" and HATE.)

Oh, gosh, I have just found this comment now. Sorry for the long delay!

You know, I watched it again after I wrote this review, and it occurred to me that despite the positive stuff I wrote about above, it still doesn't pass the Bechdel test, which is kind of amazing given the series of scenes at the end that Lex and Ellie share!

I can't believe that about Wesley Crusher - I practically grew up on Next Gen, and couldn't decide whether I wanted to be Wesley's girlfriend or just wanted to BE Wesley. I wonder what more positive impact it would've had on me if the character had been female, since it took me a long time to realise I could be both a girl, feminine, and into science/engineering ugh.

Hello. I just came across this post, and wanted to say that I agree with you about that film, though I think it failed even worse when it came to lingering on the horrible death of Aunt Claire's assistant. Yes, male minor characters were killed too, but her death was lingered over as if we were supposed to get off on it. Not nice.

Also, I'm going to stick up my hand and say I think JP3 was quite a good film.
