Asking in the hopes that one of my northerly friends might know something about this…

I’ve recently been trying to research Alaskan Inuit culture for an OC in my fanfic and (perhaps not surprisingly) there’s a bit of a dearth of information out there. In particular I’m trying to find out about naming conventions so that I ( Read more... )

Oh gosh I wish I could help but sadly I really am not familiar with Inuit names =/ I think we're too far south to have much interaction with the true Northron folk. Although I've heard of such practices of the surnames in local (more traditional) aboriginal cultures here if that helps any. Perhaps 'Underthenorthernlights' on tumblr may know more about that? She lived way up in the western north for a time so may have more familiarity to the Alaskan Inuit cultures than I in the 'Southron' regions =/

For the record I'm not really into the Buffy universe but I loved this tidbit. Not to mention it just makes my day to see an aboriginal character making a role in a popular fandom! =D

It certainly seems to lend credence to the theory, thank you :) I'm going to ask in a couple of comms here and on tumblr, and also hit the library tomorrow. Hopefully I can get some confirmation either way!

And I'm glad you like the idea of my OC - I'm always trying to find ways to diversify my writing (esp given how poor the source material was on this front). I wanted Buffy to go North with a companion, and so my best options were Alaskan Inuit or Norwegian Sami, given that I already know a little about each. In the end, though, I wanted the emotional resonance of returning to the USA, hence the Inuit :)

I think its brilliant to be honest! You rarely see aboriginal OC's so your idea has me definitely intrigued despite the fact i'm not even into this fandom!

Let me know what you do find as I'm curious to know if this practice is followed in the north too.
