Word Counts and A Thing

Nov 06, 2014 19:08

Not to keep harping on my woe about the length of The Soul Lies Down, but I just noticed its word count has now trundled over into the third longest thing I've ever written! The longest, to date, is The Lady of the Gift (81k) and the second longest is my novel draft from last year's NaNo (50k). Soul is currently sitting just under 42k and could ( Read more... )

I like the song, it's awesome.

Interesting start, it feels like Buffy. It's something that Buffy would want, time off but knowing she never really would have it.

God I am obsessed with this band.

I'm glad it feels like Buffy. I don't think this is the start, though. And I guess time off from herself is something Buffy's been seeking for many years now, and repeating the same mistake - there's no such thing. Poor darling :(

I heard you, I can get hooked on bands easily enough.

It does feel like Buffy, and I should have been clearer, when I said start, I meant a good piece that starts to show this work.

And yes, poor Buffy, she needs some serious R & R :(

When I'm wallowing in the delights of reading a great fic, what I want is more of it, not less. So write on!

And as a reader, I am in total agreement.

As a writer, though, I'm just trying not to freeze in terror *g*

I've always thought that the trick is to let the story be only as long as it needs to be, however long or short that is. If it really needs the words, sooner or later, they come. (Sadly, it is sometimes much, much later. :P)

Thank you and thank you! (and re word counts, one of the reasons I used to love the comment fic memes so much was because I would type directly into the comment box and not even know what the word count was, let alone worry about it - I ended up with a couple of fics over 10k that way!)
