Competing for Mom

So this is mothers day, and my brother has told me that he bought mom some jewellery from Tiffany's.  I haven't done anything and frankly I am at a loss. I'm still getting to know her as a person, which is a slow process. Maybe I should put together a collection of candy and murder mysteries. I know she likes those. She reads books on her kindle

If I were a mom with grown children, as opposed to a mom with a 4-year-old who probably only vaguely understands the concept of Mother's Day, I'd far rather receive books I enjoy reading and things I enjoy eating than expensive jewelry I might or might not like. To me, it would be a better indicator that my kids actually paid attention to what I like instead of just opting for What Women Are Supposed To Like.

Try for something sentimental / emotional with the awww factor that clearly took some time and effort to put together?
