End of Birthday Month, beginning of Back To School

The pain.  It hurts.
My back has been aching for days.  Today it seems to be worse.  Ow. I've been sitting with hard books against it, which helps some.  I've been working on my assignments, in case it's psychosomatic (representing my sense that I am carrying the heavy weight of my uncompleted tasks). I've got a ton of things to get done in the next ( Read more... )

Get your back checked out, if you can. abigor and I both know from back pain. We can recommend a great chiropractor if you need one. Even if it's stress-related, the tension causing the pain is real!

Third Man is a good movie. Harry Lime is a good villain. Even if he is killing kids for money (and what respectable multinational doesn't?) he gets some good lines.

Also, Data and the Vulcans totally wants to be the name of a doo-wop filk group. That performs in costume.

Also also, abigor and I will likely be hitting the Veggie Food Fair, so maybe we'll see you down there.

I'm sure being attracted to aliens would be its own thing. Earth mammals - i.e., other primates and "lower" mammals - have a lot more in common with us than any alien physiology would, yet attraction to other animals is considered beastiality, not merely an extension of "normal" sexuality. Likewise, the intellect and thought processes of a human child or teen will have a lot more in common with us than that of an alien intellect, but those are also still their own things (pedophilia/hebephilia/ephebophilia).

As for finding evil sexy, there's a lot of us who are attracted to evil in fiction. I'm a total hybristophile when it comes to fictional horror. As long as it doesn't cross over into fetishizing (and rationalizing/sanctioning) real horrors, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

And seriously, anyone who doesn't find H.R. Giger's work sexy needs their head checked.

I sense a theme for a future anthology for your publishing company here... alien erotica!

It's already on the list for year two. Pink and I are big Alien fans. ;)

Xenophilia/xenosexual? I'm also thinking of Phil Foglio's Xenophile series.

I'd like to check out the Vegetarian Food Fair too. Perhaps a group outing is in order?

I'm kind of getting into the theory of veganism in a way that parallels my interest in sexual theory. At the same time I'm also pursuing postcolonial native theory as well, and the two are meshing, as they do in my AAR paper.Out of curiosity, how do you feel about the tensions between the animal rights movement and the Native community with regard to issues like hunting and fur trapping ( ... )

The treaties we've signed clearly give first nations people the right to hunt and fish. I don't question that. But that's a legal issue and I see trapping as a moral issue. I no longer think it's the proper expression of native values to do so. Our context has changed too much. I don't think that preserving native culture as a timeless bubble is going to ensure its longevity. Too much of native culture is treated as if it's a pioneer village display. It needs to be permitted to change and develop. And that's what I'm arguing in my paper - that Mi'kmaq legends (and the values and spiritual relationships expressed in them) provide the basis for an indigenous vegetarianism/veganism. Since the purpose of its inclusion in the treaties was to ensure independence in terms of sustenance I think the practice should be replaced by the transfer of capital for native economic self-regulation. The confederacies should be treated as provinces. They should have elected officials in parliament.

Is the story of Usitebulajoo not the one on p. 118 of this free eBook edition of Rand? http://www.invisiblebooks.com/Rand.pdf

If not, let me know the title you're looking for -- I might own it. (Provided I can get inside my own library room... it's a cluttered disaster zone!)

The pdf isn't opening for me; I'll check from another computer. Since the author of Mi'kmaq landscapes uses Rand as a source it's likely the same story. The tip is much appreciated.
