D&D is a lot of good things RPGwise, but elegant ain't one of them. The stripped-down core of it is good, though, in the Castles & Crusades version. I've heard good things about True20 as well, but haven't checked it out yet.

Funnily enough, Feng Shui had been considered but the fact that it has only archetypes and no actual character creation rules is a real deal-killer for me
