Brielle wasn't sure what she was doing here.

She'd walked into her office this morning and was met by Hurricane Maggie, her coworker, who'd apparently taken it personally that Bri spent so much time working. Although Bri wasn't sure why that was a bad thing, exactly, other than she'd been given a list of things she was supposed to do outside of the office this morning, which included indulging in a late breakfast somewhere and a mandatory manicure.

Brielle had never even had a manicure before, and she was fairly certain this was not in her job description, but her coworker had taken her under her wing a few weeks before and had been all kinds of helpful when Bri needed it, so she'd gone along with the change in plans - albeit with a very bewildered look. She'd find something to do to occupy her morning, since she'd been ordered out of the office until after lunch.

Stepping into the Mane Attraction - the place Maggie had recommended, of course - Brielle glanced around and moved towards the counter, hoping she was at the right place.

Ariel's shoulders were back to tensing slightly and relaxing as soon as she glanced up and saw that it was someone very non-threatening. In fact, for the first time in awhile, Ariel almost felt a pang of envy at the cuteness the woman who entered managed so flawlessly.

Karli's gum popped annoyingly behind her as she put up the broom and pan and Ariel turned to meet the newcomer with a welcoming smile. "Hi, welcome to The Mane Attraction," she said, approaching the front counter. "What can I do for you today?"

Brielle smiled brightly as one of the young women approached, looking a little uncertain despite herself. "Hi," she replied, tucking her hair behind her ear in a nervous gesture that was quickly becoming habit these days. "I'm here to get a manicure. I think. Um, do I need an appointment for that or can I really just walk right in?"

She was going to kill Maggie after lunch for this...

"No worries, we accept walk ins so long as we don't have an appointment lined up, so you're just fine," Ariel assured the young woman. "I can take care of that for you right now, in fact."

She smiled and gestured Brielle around the counter to the nail station. "I'm Ariel, by the way," she said. "Have you ever had a manicure before?" From her slightly uncertain demeanor, Ariel would guess the answer was no.

Ariel knew this girl had to have had at least a couple of boyfriends. She was too pretty to not have, really. But then, people had a way of surprising you at times, she'd found.

She hesitated only a beat before replying. "I did," she said. "I basically dated the same guy through all of high school and a long time afterward. Broke up with him last year, though." She busied her hands with unscrewing the clear nail polish again. If that wasn't the most abbreviated version of events, leaving out just about everything, she thought.

Brielle heard the hesitation in her voice and felt bad for bringing up bad memories. "I'm sorry," she apologized softly, staring at her newly-painted nails. "It's always hard adjusting to life without someone in it, after they've been there for so long." She didn't know the situation at all, and didn't want to press deeper if it was still a painful subject for the other girl.

"No problem," Ariel said easily. "It was just very complicated, that's all. And I guess I sometimes still miss him, even if I'm glad it's over." Talk about complicated. She'd lived for Josh for so long, it was strange not to have him in her life now. She missed the good times, those times that filled in between the bad. It was just the bad had started coming so frequently that she had been forced to admit it was no longer worth it--especially after he beat her so very badly that last time.

She started the final topcoat, sure the color was dry. "But anyway, you should totally get out some now that you're all painted and stuff. Show them off," she said, flashing a grin.

Brielle followed the change in topics, flashing Ariel a bright smile as she glanced down at her nails again. "I should, you're right. Maybe I'll do that this weekend after all. Slip out on the town somewhere."
