After closing up shop, Jay had swallowed some pain pills and then got into his beast of a car and drove over to Max's house. He felt like celebrating their birthdays, so he had some movies with him. He parked where he always did and with the bag of stuff and his cane, hobbled up to the door. He knocked on it, hoping Max was home.

Ruth popped the cake into the oven when she heard a knock at the door. Max was still at his parents place, but he'd be home soon. Still, she wasn't expecting anyone, and they didn't get a lot of people going door-to-door than she noticed around here.

She moved to the peephole, pushing her still-damp hair back. It was an older man, a bit scruff, with a bag and a cane. She set the safety latch and opened the door a bit.

"Hello? Can I help you?" She peeked out at him, eyes wide.

Jay blinked and checked the number of the house. No, he was at the right house. "Is Max home? I'm Jay, one of his friends."

Abby remembered Max mentioning a friend named Jay, but not that he was coming over. He'd never had company since she moved in. "Um, Max isn't expecting you, is he?" She avoided admitting he wasn't home, not sure what to do with a stranger who claimed to be his friend.

"Um, do you have some sort of ID?" She said hesitantly, knowing she sounded like a little ninny, but she wasn't in the habit of dealing with strangers and she'd rather be safe than sorry. Just because she was a country girl didn't make her stupid.
