This holiday would have normally been spent with Zach's parents, a thought that turned Neve's stomach, the idea of spending a holiday with the same people who had tried to take her girls from her was not a pleasant one. Thankfully she had received a much better and far more pleasant offer in spending the day with Jake, Star and his family. It had sure been an interesting year, and she would have never thought at the beginning of it that she would be spending the holiday with her boyfriend's family, or that the man filling that role would be Jake ( ... )

Jake answered the door himself. Though perhaps not as badly as she could have, Star was sulking that Neve was joining them; the girls apparently she did not mind. He also wondered if there was something to the offhand comment the other day about what her mom might be doing for the holiday, but when he'd tried to follow up on it she'd clammed up and gone to her room of her own accord.

Teenagers. What was he to do?

But overall she seemed to be in an okay mood, if quiet. He'd take what he could get. She had hugged him several times today, though, so he thought the meaning of the holiday was at least on her mind, and that could be why she was quieter than usual.

He smiled up at Neve and included the two girls in his welcoming grin. Uh oh, he hoped that didn't mean trouble, though since Ezra wasn't with them maybe he had Mack. Still. "Come on in, you all. Let me get out of your way," he said, pushing himself backward so they could come on in.

Neve was completely unashamed of the way her heart kind of skipped when Jake answered the door and smiled up at her, there was just something about seeing that smiling and knowing how he felt about her. She was pleased when it seemed that Jake was happy to see not only her, but her girls as well; though this should have surprised her since he had always been fond of her girls. "Hey you." She greeted him, stepping into the house as he moved back, and she was shadowed by Shelby and Bryn. "Ezra and Mack are on their way." Neve explained, realizing belatedly that Jake might worry why her youngest, and the daughter that was struggling most with their relationship, wasn't here ( ... )

Jake grinned back at her. "Hey you," he said back. "Ah okay. Good to know," he said with a nod, wondering briefly about it but deciding whatever the reason, Ezra would take care of his niece; he had heard he was closer to the middle child anyway.

He chuckled at Bryn's explanation, pulling her on up into his lap to hug her and kiss the top of her head fondly. "Oh really? Like Bumblebee? That is a nice car," he said. "I can see why your uncle really wanted one."

He looked up to smile at Shelby. "Hey, Shelby, I'm glad you're here," he said. "I think Star is either in the kitchen or in her room, if you're wondering where she is." He wasn't going to force himself on Neve's children, but he would acknowledge them. He wasn't about to keep her here right now when she likely wanted to be elsewhere, though. He gave her the graceful out for the moment.

"Well, they have a bit of time before it becomes urgent, luckily," Jake said. "I think the turkey isn't quite done yet."

“Be happy to remind you any time,” Jake said, wishing he had a moment to properly ‘remind’ her right now. Yes, definitely. He had enjoyed that ‘conversation’ very much ( ... )

"I look forward to that reminder." Neve answered with a half smile. She hoped they would get a moment alone at some point, though likely if it was today it wouldn't go near as far as their conversation had the week before ( ... )

Jake was familiar with the mentality of a seven-year-old girl, at least. Star and Bryn might be a lot different, but there were certain things most children that age had and one was the way an idea crept into their heads. “Don’t I know it,” he said with a faint smile. It gave him a lot of ideas, in fact, some of which he was sure it was much too soon for, but he supposed so long as he kept it to himself, it would be fine ( ... )

This really was an odd situation to be in, Neve was far more used to not getting along with her significant other's parents. She had never seen eye to eye with her mother in law. The fact that Amanda not only seemed okay with her relationship with Jake, but also that they had always been on friendly terms was something that pleased Neve. "Well, I'm really glad to be here." It had been nice over the summer to have people she could lean on during all of this. She was glad to be here for many reasons, one of which was that it was spending the holidays with all the people she cared about ( ... )
