Jasper had always been a thinker, but the past weeks, it seemed like he just couldn't get his mind to shut off at all. It wasn't necessarily a good thing, because it seemed like his mind just kept going around in circles, and it all kept coming back to the same thought, that he'd been selfish and impulsive about some things, which just wasn't like him. He wasn't proud of it; in fact, he felt so guilty about it, but he just didn't know what to do. Talking to his mom last week hadn't exactly helped except to make him even more conflicted about everything.
He was glad when Demi said she wanted to come over to talk. He wasn't sure what he was going to say, what he could say, but he knew that he needed to start being honest with her, with himself. Things had changed, and he just didn't know what that meant for them anymore. He was trying to distract himself by reading Stephen King's new book, Mile 81, when he heard the knock at the door. "Come on in," he called out, having left the door unlocked for her. He set the book aside as he waited

Demi pushed open the door, thinking to herself that there was a time when Jasper would have met her halfway as soon as he heard her come in. Would wrap her in his arms and hold her close and fuck, she missed that. She smiled slightly when she spotted him, crossing over and kissing his cheek in greeting. "Hey," she murmured quietly, wishing, hoping, that he'd tug her close.
Jasper stood up as Demi came inside, fighting the urge to tuck his hands in his pockets. He was nervous and more than a little antsy about this coming conversation, particularly because Demi was the one who'd brought up needing to talk, and he felt a little guilty at the thought that she'd probably picked up on the fact that things were off on his end. He knew it hurt her that he was still so hesitant to let her all the way in to Abby's life, but he had to do what he thought was right as a parent, and that's what he'd been doing. "Hey," he replied softly, wrapping his arms around her in a quick hug as his lips brushed over her cheek.
She relaxed slightly as Jasper touched her, sliding her own arms around his waist and holding on. This is what she needed. Just Jasper. "Missed you," she mumbled, turning her head into his chest for a second and savoring the moment. She pulled back, smiling up at him. God, she never wanted to leave this. This was home for her, wherever Jasper was. She sobered slightly, still unsure if he felt the same. She didn't particularly want to find out, but she had to.
She slowly pulled away, her eyes still on his and trying not to fidget her hands. "We need to talk," she whispered, trying to somehow steel herself for the coming conversation. "But before we start, I have to tell you I love you."
