Miranda despite herself had gotten drawn into the book she was reading, it was some crime novel she wouldn’t have given a second glance if it hadn’t come highly recommended through Davis. So to say she was in her own world would be an understatement.
She startled only a little when she was addressed, recovering quickly as she glanced up to see who had said her name. “Hmm?” She asked, making sure to give the person a friendly smile, registering only after that he looked very familiar. Where had she met him before? He wasn’t a client or involved with the firm in any way, she was certain of that. Then it connected. Jake’s party. Ezra, the former army brat. “Oh, Ezra, how are you?”
Ezra felt kind of bad when she startled, he hadn't meant to surprise her. Granted he should have expected someone to jump when you approached them while they were reading. He returned her smile with a crooked grin, aware she didn't recognize him straight away. Though only moments passed before a look of recognition crossed her features, and Ezra felt relieved. Least he hadn't made a complete fool of himself, and he had been right in that this was Miranda. "Good, how're you?" He asked, motioned towards one of the chairs. "Mind if I sit down?" It wouldn't be for long since his break wasn't that long, but he could sit for a little while.
He had to laugh, at least this time around they hadn't physically ran into each other. "If you don't mind me asking, what was it you were reading just now?" Ezra was curious, and looking for conversation topics.
“Of course not, please sit down.” Miranda replied, setting her e-reader aside. “It will be easier to have a conversation if I’m not expected to look up at you.” She took a drink of her latte, pulling a leg up underneath herself. “I’m doing well. Very busy, but that isn’t unusual.” She was starting to believe that was her default. Busy. “How is your fiancé?” She asked him politely; she had hadn’t had the opportunity to meet him at Jake’s, though Ezra had seemed fond of him in the conversation they had had.
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” She answered, “I’m a bit behind on the trend, but a friend of mine encouraged me to read it. It’s not usually the type of literature I enjoy.” She enjoyed the classics usually. Dickens and Austen were a couple of her favorites. But this was good, interesting at least. “Have you read it?”
