"There is steak on the grill that I'm burning for you." Jay yelled back from the bedroom. He was just changing into something more comfortable. Physical therapy was helping but he felt sore and old today. It was a feeling more and more usual as the days progressed.

He considered Max's question as he tugged on his t-shirt. "Halo, I could use some good old fashioned first person shooter."

He came out of the bedroom and nodded at Max. "Console's already set up."

"Just so long as it still bleeds a bit." Max hollered back. "Want a bottle or a glass?" Meaning beer or whiskey.

"Fixing any particular faces to blow off?" He teased. "Not that you would, but it might help."

He fired up the game and began player selection. "So, tell Uncle Max all about it."

"It'll bleed for you, promise." Jay yelled back, "Bottle first then the glass."

He stopped and actually considered that for a moment, "No, not really. Just wanting to blow away some bad guys, pretend I'm a superhero. Same old." He was in his early forties and yet some stuff hadn't changed since he was twelve. Probably would never change.

He padded out to the balcony and then brought the steaks back inside. They looked perfect. "Dinner's done." He told his best friend. "And I don't know. I mean it was good. And then she disappeared and I'm not sure what to do about it. I mean..." Jay trailed off, feeling awkward.

Max popped the top off two beers, offering one to Jay when he came in. "Nothing wrong with that. Hell, if that ever changed I'd be taking you to a hospital to get checked out."

"Thanks." He grabbed a plate. "Vanishing acts generally don't bode well. I mean, its like saying you weren't important enough to be in the know." He realized what he said and made a face. "Sorry. This is why I don't date. Most women hear me talk a bit too straight and get offended."

He patted Jay on the back. "Whatever caused her to go radio silent is on her. Her loss."
