Date: March 20, 2011 Characters: Margaret and Stephen Ross Location: restaurant Status: Private Summary: It’s her baby boy’s birthday. Completion: Incomplete
Stephen was beyond nervous. It was ridiculous to be and he hated himself immensely for it. He was going to see his mother, for Christ's sake, he shouldn't feel so anxious. But things were different. So much more different than when he had last seen his mom's smiling face. Back at Christmas when things were fine and normal and not totally blown apart
( ... )
Maggie smiled broadly as she looked up to see Stephen walking over. She rose and hugged him when he got close enough, still marveling to this day at how tall and strong her boy had become. "Hi, Stephen," she said, pulling back and smiling at him. "Happy birthday, honey. Have you had a good day? How are classes going?" she asked.
She sat back down, smoothing her hands across the menu. "Feel free to order anything. It's your birthday treat today."
Maggie had gotten good at pretending things were normal a long time ago. Her life hadn't been normal in a long, long time, but she'd long ago developed the 'nothing is wrong' outer attitude to cover her inner turmoil. She'd tried to never let her kids know when something was going wrong in her life, choosing instead to smile and make them happy.
